Just north of Dallas and slightly to the west of our own Sandbrock Ranch is the much-adored little town of Aubrey, Texas.
Those who already call Sandbrock Ranch home are aware of everything this beloved little town has to offer, but if you’re unfamiliar with the area or if you’re doing research prior to making a move to Texas, you may be wondering about things to do in Aubrey Texas and what our favorite small town is known for.
Since we consider ourselves to be unofficial experts on the subject, we thought we would help fill in a few details!
History Of Aubrey
Aubrey’s first settlers arrived in the area in the 1840’s. These pioneers sought a better life out west, and found an abundance of land, fertile soil, and access to water- as well as the dense Cross Timbers forest.
The Key Schoolhouse was the first recorded structure in Aubrey. Built in 1858, some of the students that attended the school eventually came to play important roles in Aubrey’s development.
Those students were Ben Moss, W.R. Coffey, and Jim and Joe Wilcox, among others.
As time passed into the 1870’s, additional school houses were built, a doctor’s office was established, churches developed, and families continued to settle in the town. In the 1880’s, the Texas Pacific Railroad built a depot in Aubrey, bringing even more growth to the area and giving the town an economic boost.
Did you know?
In 1881, the community decided they wanted to apply for a post office. Now, up until this point, Aubrey hadn’t been called Aubrey- its name had been “Onega.” The citizens didn’t like this name very much, and neither did the officials in Washington, so they decided it was time to change it.
When filling out the post office application, three new names were put in a hat, and the name Aubrey was drawn. This is the name the community put on the post office application, and after the post office was granted, the name stuck.
What does Aubrey have to offer?
As mentioned above, the city of Aubrey was officially founded in 1867. If that sounds like a long time ago, it was! For historical reference, that was the year that the United States agreed to purchase the territory of Alaska.
Since then, Aubrey has been the quintessential small Texas town, and it’s one that everyone should get a chance to visit if they’re craving the true small-town experience.
We’ve often said that Aubrey is one of the best kept secrets in the state, but the population is growing steadily, which means that people are definitely catching on to this hidden gem in northeast Texas.
What is Aubrey known for?
Aubrey, shining with Texas charm, is often referred to as “the horse capital of Texas” because of the town’s moderate climate, top-tier soil, and beautiful surroundings. It offers ideal conditions for horse breeding, making it a rancher’s slice of heaven.
It’s everyone’s favorite small town because it’s family friendly with plenty of public schools, affordable housing, and a close proximity to neighboring Texas towns such as Frisco, Prosper, and Denton.
There’s always a lot to do in Aubrey, and folks around here like to stay active. In fact, the city topped a list of the 10 Healthiest Neighborhoods put together by the Dallas Morning News in both 2014 and 2015!
